صراع الأذكياء... "الضوء" في نفق الجريمة هنا تركه الجاني عامداً متعمداً لكي يلتقطه المحقق البوليسي ويمشي على هُداه إلى... الضلال والتيه بعيداً عن الشكوك بالمجرم الحقيقي.
ولكن هذا هو بالضبط ما جعل المحقق الذكي يعرض عنه، ويلتقط الطعم ويعيده إلى شبكة المجرم، على شكل قيد حديدي يذهب به إلى السجن، بل إن المحقق الذكي لم ينخدع حتى بالدم الموجود إلى جانب الضحية، لأنه كان دم المجرم الجاني نفسه... وأيضاً استطاع أن يجزم أن المجرم شخص عصبي من أثر خطواته، وأن أنفه ينزف دماً حينما يتعرض لضغط عصبي شديد.
وهكذا، حتى استنتج أيضاً أن الجانب ذو وجه أحمر، وقد أثبتت الأحداث أن استنتاجه كان محقاً.
أكثر من ذلك، في صراع الأدمغة الذكية، استطاع المحقق أن يعرف، بعدما فحص الغرفة التي حدثت فيها الجريمة، مقدار طول قامة الجاني، ومعلومات حول السيجار الذي كان يستعمله، وحول طول أظفاره!...
