توماس غونزالس ولد عام 1950 في مدينة ميديلين في كولومبيا. درسة الفلسفة قبل أن يصبح ساقياً في إحدى الحانات الليلية. كانت أولى منشوراته. " في البداية كان البحر" عام 1983 . عاش غونزاليس في ميامي ونيويورك حيث كتب أغلب أعماله بينما كان يعمل مترجما ً لكسب العيش. بعد عشرين عاما في الولايات المتحدة عاد الى كولومبيا، حيث يسكن الآن. ترجمت كتبه الى ست لغات.
