من المفروغ منه أن الأدب بالمغرب كان من الناحية التاريخية، آخر ما تنفست به العربية في أقطارها المفتوحة، فقد عرفت الأقطار الإسلامية على الإطلاق، شرقاً وغرباً أدباً عربياً نشأ فيها أو نزح إليها، قبل أن يعرف ذلك المغرب الأقصى، بالخصوص في هذا التحديد الذي يخرج من نطاقه إمارة تاهرت الرستمية المتاخمة. وهذا التأخير كان لأسباب جغرافية وحضارية واجتماعية وسياسية، عملت فيها الفتن والحروب، وعملت فيها أكثر من ذلك كله فتوحات الأندلس التي تسرب بها العنصر العربي من البلاد، بل تسرب منها عناصر مغربية كان يرجى منها أن تأتي بأكلها في بلادها، فأتت بذلك الأُكُلْ في البلاد التي نزحت أو آباؤها إليها، وفي مقدمة هؤلاء أبناء موسى وطارق وأحفادهما كما في جمهرة الأنساب لابن حزم.
ففتح الأندلس سدّ على بواكير الأدب العربي الأبواب وعاق سيرها في طريقها المستقيم نحو النشوء والارتقاء في هذه البلاد العربية، ثم كان قاطعاً لخطوط الهجرة العربية فيما بعد. لهذا تأخر ظهور الأدب العربي في بلاد المغرب، فكانت أول بادرة له في هذه البلاد أوائل القرن الثالث أو أواخر القرن الثاني، ويجد الباحث بأن مراكز الثقافة الأولى، كان جلّها واقعاً على السواحل الشمالية للمغرب، مثل مليلية، والنكور، وسبتة، وطنجة وأصيلا، والبصرة، التي كانت تحاذي البحر أو تقاربه، يضاف إلى هذه المراكز الساحلية العاصمة الخطيرة فاس، بعد العاصمة الخارجية سجلماسة.
وفي هذا الكتاب يتحدث المؤلف عن تلك الحركة الأدبية في المغرب الأقصى، ممهداً بمقدمة في المراكز الأولى للثقافة المغربية، وفيما لابسها من ظروف تاريخية واجتماعية وجغرافية أحياناً، وليقسم من ثم الموضوع إلى أبواب داخلها فصول، تمّ تحديدها بمراحل تاريخية. وقد جعل المؤلف لهذا الأدب أبواباً تضمنت فصولاً، أولها ما قبل المرابطين، وثانيها عصر المرابطين، وثالثها عصر الموحدين، ورابعها عصر المرينيين، وخامسها عصر الوطاسيين، وسادسها عصر السعديين، وسابعها العهد العلوي الحالي.
