استعان بن شيخ بكوكبة من الباحثين العرب والأجانب المتخصصين بعصر أو نوع أدبي أو أعمال أديب معين وكتب بصحبتهم مادة هذا المعجم الدسمة. وهي مادة يجتمع فيها أدباء اللغة العربية، شعراء وروائيين وقصاصين ومسرحيين وكتاب مقامات ورسائل وجغرافيين ورحالة، إلخ، والأنواع الأدبية المختلفة التي يجري استعراضها أفقياً وعمودياً، إضافة إلى إشكاليات وتقنيات خاصة بنوع أو بعصر أو بحيز جغرافي.
هكذا جاء معجم آداب اللغة العربية ليغطي مسافة تاريخية تمتد من الجاهلية إلى أواخر القرن العشرين، ومساحة جغرافية تشمل العالم العربي من مشارقه إلى مغاربه، ومدى لغوياً إبداعياً يساهم في تشكيله، إلى جانب العرب، آخرون جاؤوا من أقاصي الشرق أو انطلق صوتهم من الأندلس.
ثم رأى بن شيخ فائدة في إدخال بعد آخر إلى هذا العمل من خلال تضمينه أدباء مغاربة يكتبون بالفرنسية، وهذا ما أنتج معجم الأدب الفرنكوفوني المغاربي.
