لما كانت الأحكام الشرعية، والقضايا الفقهية، وسائل مقاصد المكلّفين، ومناط مصالح الدنيا والدين، وأجل العلوم قدراً، وأعلاها شرفاً وذكراً، لما يتعلق بها من مصالح العباد، في المعاش والمعاد، كانت أولى بالالتفات إليها، وأجدر بالاعتماد عليها، وحيث كان لا سبيل إلى استثمارها، دون النظر في مسالكها، ولا مطمح في اقتناصها، في غير التفات إلى مداركها، كان من اللازمات، والقضايا الواجبات، البحث في أغوارها، والكشف في أسرارها، والإحاطة بمعانيها، والمعرفة بمبانيها، حتى تذلل طرق الاستثمار، وينقاد جموح غامض الأفكار.
وفي هذا الإطار جاء كتابا "التوضيح" و"التلويج" اللذان عني "الدركاني" بشرحهما في كتابه الذي نقلب صفحاته، موضحاً الغامض منهما، وشارحاً الصعب فيهما ليسهل على الباحث الغرف من معينهم والاستفادة من كنوزهم.
