يغلب على الظن أن هذا الكتاب، هو كتاب مغربي في الأدب ينتمي إلى الحقبة الفاطمية المغربية، وهو يتفرد بذكر بعض الجوانب الإنسانية التي تدل على خبرة عميقة بالحياة لدى نفر من علماء الأمة الأوائل كالفراهيدي وابن الأعرابي، وابن الأنباري وأبى عمرو بن العلاء. على أن أهم ما يقدمه هذا الكتاب هو صورة الخلفاء الفاطميين في المغرب.
والكتاب يدعو إلى إعادة النظر في عقائد الفاطميين، وفي موقفهم من الخلافة العباسية هذا الكتاب مما اصطلحت المكتبة العربية على تسميته بكتب المحاسن والأضداد ألفه برية في مائة وسبعة وخمسين باباً. وقد اعتمد المحقق في عمله على ثلاث نسخ ليس في أي منها ما يمكن أن يعده المحقق نسخة أماً وهي نسخة ليدن، وناسخها هو محمد بن محمد الجزري الشهير ابن حمي، وقد ضمت هذه النسخة أبواب الكتاب جميعاً.
وكذلك نسختا المكتبة الظاهرية بدمشق الأولى منها نسخها محمد بن إبراهيم الأكرمي الشامي، أما الثانية فلا يعرف ناسخها. وقد التزم المحقق فيما اعتقده صواباً في هذه النسخ الثلاث فعمد إلى الحواشي والتعليقات وأورد ما هو لازم منها لكي لا يثقل على القارئ وخرّج الآيات والأحاديث ووضع فهارس لذلك، كما رتب فهرساً للقوافي بحسب الحروف الأبجدية، إضافة إلى فهرس عاماً بالموضوعات.
"...يغلب على الظن أن هذا الكتاب هو أول كتاب مغربي في الأدب يصل إلينا من الحقبة الفاطمية، فلم اعثر على من ذكر كتاباً في الأدب أسبق منه... ومن هنا فالكتاب يمكن أن يكون نموذجاً مبكراً للتأليف الأدبي في المغرب العربي... ومن وجوه طرافة هذا الكتاب أنه تحدث لنا عن جوانب إنسانية تدل على خبرة عميقة بالحياة لدى نفر من علمائنا الأوائل مثل الخليل بن أحمد الفراهيدي، وابن الأعرابي وابن الأنباري وأبي عمرة بن العلاء..."
