صاحب هذه الألفية هو جمال الدين محمد بن عبد الله بن مالك العلامة الأندلسي المالكي حين كان بالمغرب، الشافعي حين انتقل إلى المشرق، النحوي نزيل دمشق. ولد بجيّان الأندلس سنة 600هـ وسمع بدمشق من عدة مشايخ، وأخذ العربية عن غير واحد وأخذ القراءات عن أبي العباس أحمد بن نوار، وقرأ كتاب سيبويه على أبي عبد الله بن مالك المرشاني، وصرف همته إلى إتقان لسان العرب حتى بلغ فيه الغاية، وأربى على المتقدمين.
وكان إماما القراءات وعالماً بها، وصنف فيها قصيدة دالية مرموزة في قدر الشاطبية وأما اللغة فكان إليه المنتهى فيها، وأما النحو والتصريف فكان فيهما ابن مالك بحراً لا يجاري وفي هذا العلم ألّف ألفيته التي قيل أنه صنفها لولده تقي الدين محمد المدعوّ بالأسد. ولأهمية هذه الألفية فقد قام بشرحها كثيرون من أئمة علماء النحو.
