قلّ أن ينعقد الإجماع، إجماع الخاصة والعامة معاً، على تقدير شاعر، والإشادة بفضائله الأخلاقية ومواهبه الفنية وحسن أدائه لرسالته الاجتماعية، مثلما انعقد على تمجيد خليل مطران والإقرار بفضله الكبير في شتى المجالات والحقول. والشائق الممتع في هذا الإجماع أنّه انعقد على حَمِدٍ رجل تعددت آفاقه، وتنوعت آثاره، وتشعبت سُبُلُ نشاطه، فكان إلى شاعريته-وهي أبرز الجوانب المعروفة من شخصيته-مؤرخاً، وباحثاً ومؤلفاً، ومترجماً، وعاملاً سياسياً، وثائراً، وصحافياً، وعالماً اقتصادياً، ومشترعاً، وحتى رجل أعمال يمارس التجارة، ويعقد الصفقات، ويدقّق في الحسابات... وظل مع هذا التنوّع والإنتاج الزاخر، موضع إكبار لدى كلّ من عرفه واحتكّ به بثني الجميع على أخلاقه وسعة اطلاعه وبُعد نظره وحسن تصرفه.
والرأي السائد أيضاً أنه يأتي في طليعة الذين جدّدوا الشعر العربي، ونقلوه من ظلمات الجاهلية والقرون الوسطى، إلى عالم القرن العشرين وما يعجّ به من أنوار وألوان وأفكار، وحياة حافلة بكل عجيب وطريف، والحقيقة أ، مطران يمثل في تاريخ النهضة الأدبية المعاصرة نموذجاً قلّ مثاله في الأدب العربي كله، ألا وهو "الشاعر المثقف" الذي يظهر أثر ثقافته عميقاً في شعره، وشخصيته وسيرته، ولم يكن الشاعر العربي من قبل، يُعنى بتثقيف نفسه، ولا كان مجتمعه يفترض فيه شيئاً من ذلك، أو يطالبه به، حتى إذا جاء مطران أصبح قدوة في جانب، ومقياساً في جانب آخر. وهكذا كان.. مجدداً، ومصلحاً، ومثالاً في آن واحد.
ولتعريف بهذا الأديب والشاعر عني المؤلف "عبد اللطيف شرارة" بوضع هذه الدراسة التحليلية التي بين أيدينا والتي يتحدث في قسمها الأول عن سيرة خليل مطران الذاتية، بدءاً بمولده، وشخصيته، وأسرته، وشخصيته وأخلاقه، ومشاركته في حلة تجديد الشعر العربي، وأخيراً وفاته. أما القسم الثاني فتضمن مقتطفات من آثاره الشعرية التي جعلته موضع إكبار معاصريه وتقديرهم. وهذه المقتطفات ما هي إلا نماذج لا تغني عن جملة إنتاجه، وتكفي فقط بإعطاء صورة مكثفة عن علم من أعلام الشعر العربي في هذا القرن.
