إن من المواضيع التي سعى العلماء إلى تدوينها والاهتمام بها وأعاروها عنايتهم هي الفضائل. وفضائل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وأهل بيته في طليعة ذلك. هذا وإن الفضائل مضافة إلى موضوع القرب من الله تشير إلى تاريخ إسلامي مختزل في عمقها، فهي لسان الأحداث متى استنطقت نطقت، كحديث الراية "لأعطين الراية غداً رجلاً يحبه الله ورسوله" وحديث: "أما ترضى أن تكون مني بمنزلة هارون من موسى" فهذه الأحاديث تستدعي قارئها أن يتساءل ما هي الأحداث في خيبر التي تطلبت رجلاً فريداً وعنصراً وحيداً ولا مثيل له يحبه الله ورسوله... فلم يكن لها سوى علي رضي الله عنه.
وحديث المنزلة يثير عند المطالع بعض الحلقات التاريخية لبني إسرائيل، ويحاول أن يربط تلك الحلقات بالواقع الإسلامي وتتجسد في مخيلته صورة افتراق بين إسرائيل وعبادتهم للعجل وحياة مؤامرة ضد التوحيد فلماذا إذن علي كهارون دون غيره؟
وهكذا تتوارد مثل هذه الإثارات عند القارئ مما تتولد عنده فكرة تتطور كلما وضع يديه على بعض الفضائل. وبذلك تتحول الفضائل إلى مستندات تاريخية ووثائق إنسانية ترسم الأحداث بحقيقتها ومضافاً لما فيها من فوائد أخرى. ولهذا عمل العلماء على تدوين الفضائل المهمة لا سيما فضائل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وأهل بيته.
وهذا الكتاب الذي نقلب صفحاته واحد من الكتب الهامة التي ألفت في هذا الموضوع. وقد عمل على تهذيبه وكان العمل فيه كالتالي: ترتيب الكلمات ابتداءً من النبي الأكرم ثم أهل بيته بالتسلسل. جمع الاحاديث المتفرقة في الكتاب وجعل كل فضيلة لصاحبها ضمن بابه الخاص. تلخيص الكتاب وجعله واحداً بعد أن كان ثلاثة أجزاء وذلك بحذف الأحاديث المكررة فيه وحذف بعض الأمور الجانبية. وضع عناوين بارزة لكل طائفة من الفضائل الشريفة لم تكن موجودة في الكتاب الأصل.
