إنه من المعلوم أن علوم القرآن الكريم أشرف العلوم على الإطلاق لأن القرآن الكريم كلام الله تبارك وتعالى، وأهله هم أهل الله عزّ وجلّ وخاصّته.
وقد تفرغ رجال من الأمة لحمل القرآن الكريم وتعلمه وتعليمه فدخلوا في الخيرية التي أخبر عنها صلى الله عليه وسلم بقوله: "خيركم من تعلم القرآن وعلمه".
ومن أعظم هؤلاء الرجال كان الإمام "الشاطبيّ" إذ أن الله تعالى بارك في علمه وتأليفه فكانت نافعةٌ متداولة حتى عصرنا هذا، ولقد جاءت سيرة الإمام "الشاطبيّ" متفرِّقة في كتب التراجمِ لم تُوفَّ حقَّها من الدراسة والإعتناء.
وقد قَيَّض الله تعالى لها الإمام القَسْطلانيّ فجمع منها ما وصل إليه من سيرته في رسالة عزيزة لطيفة لكنها مملوءة بالأسانيد والأخبار التي لا تلائم إلاّ فئة محدودة من الناس، لذلك رأى المؤلف ضرورة إختصارها حاذفاً منها ما لا يهم القارئ الذي يريد أن يطَّلع على سيرة هذا الإمام الكبير.
كما جمع أخبار الإمام "الشاطبيّ" التي لم يوردها القَسْطَلانيّ، من كتب متفرقة، وألحق هذه الأخبار بآخر الكتاب في ملحق خاص بها، أما عمله في الكتاب - إضافة إلى الإختصار - فقد ترجم الأعلام الواردة أسماؤهم في الكتاب بإيجاز - عدا المشاهير منهم - وخرج الأحاديث، وشرح الغريب في حدود الطاقة، وجعل في آخر الكتاب فهرساً لفوائده لتكتمل به الفائدة.
