"من يرى لواء 48 يدرك أنه اعتاد المكان فهو يمسك ساترين يقابلهما الساتر الإيراني المحصن من سنتين، وتبدو المنطقة التي نزل بها الإيرانيون محاطة بعمامة ترابية عالية تتخللها نُدَبُ سوداء تمطر النار، وفيما ينام شط العرب صامتاً من قرون يهشم سكون انفجار يقذف بأسافل الطين وحطام السفن. مئتا متر بين الإيرانيين والعراقيين غُمرت بالمياه فنبت القصب هائلاً بين الساترين، شبكات الأسلاك الشائكة وأعشاش النابالم والكمائن القاتلة جعلت المسافة بعيدة ومستحيلة. ذلك حال الفاو منذ عبور الإيرانيين الأول. من يقترب من الفاو يدرك أنه اقتراب من الموت، الأصوات التي لم يسمعها الناس تسمع من الفاو، القتل على الطريقة الحديثة كأن يأتي من الفاو، الجوّ الراعب الذي تعوّده الجيش كان يدور هناك". الفاو "مثلث من النار" الفجر فيه لا يعني الفجر، والهدوء لا يبعث على الطمأنينة، ساعاته المحمومة، يكتبها "علي جاسب" ناقلاً ساعاتها الطويلة في ساحات القتال إلى أوراق بيضاء؛ مؤرخاً سواد ساعات "معركة الفاو".
