في كتابه (النزوع الطبقي في مسرحيات توفيق الحكيم) يقدم (إميل كبا) مقاربة نقدية لمسرحيات "توفيق الحكيم" بالاعتماد على أشخاص المسرحيات في أطرهم الاجتماعية- المهنية والخلقية أحياناً فنظر إليهم الكاتب باعتبارهم عينات أو شرائح سكانية، تتحرك في زمنها "الخاص"، زمن الأثر الفني، إطار أحداثها، والزمن "العام" كصدى من أصداء التاريخ وحركة الناس، رفقاء الحكيم.
وعليه يثور التساؤل التالي عند إميل كبَا: أي الطبقات في مسرح الحكيم تصلح لأن تكون الأول تحت المجهر؟ وبما أن هذا السؤال شائكاً، وبما أن أدب الحكيم هو أدب الحكيم هو أدب مخضرم، عايش مرحلتين متعارضتين من تاريخ مصر المعاصرة: مرحلة ما قبل الثورة، ومرحلة ما بعدها.. وحيث أن الترتيب التاريخي على –ما يرى الكاتب- إلى جانب الهرمي بالنسبة إلى مجنمع كان يحكمه أصحاب النفوذ هو خير ضامن لتسلسل الأحداث وتوضيح تطلَعات الشخصيات على نحو طبيعي لا فجاءة فيه، لهذا: جاءت المقاربة في ثلاثة فصول: الفصل الأول سلط الأضواء على "الطبقة البرجوازية": ودرس فيه النزوع الرئيسي للساسة وأهل السلطان باتجاه المال والقوة والمكانة. أما الفصل الثاني فسلط الأضواء على "الطبقة المتوسطة" توزع في سبعة فئات: منها فئة الموظفين في القطاعين الخاص والعام، فئة الأطباء، فئة المحامين... الخ. وأما الفصل الثالث فعالج ما أسماه الكاتب "العالم الثالث" وهو "عامة الشعب والفلاحون" في قسم أول، ثم "التائهون والمتسكَعون" في آخر.
وفي الختام خصص الكاتب فصلاً سماه "الفصل الأنثوي" تحدث فيه عن: النساء المرجَلات، النساء المتحررات، النساء الغانيات، النساء المحافظات، النساء التائهات والحالمات في أدب توفيق الحكيم.
