هذه الدراسة، على وجه التحديد، اعتبرها بداية مشروع علمي كبير يسدُّ فجوة في تاريخ الثقافة العربية امتدت عبر عدة عقود؛ وذلك أنه منذ تحدثتْ مناهج النقد الأدبي بخاصة في التيارات البنيوية وما بعدها ورفعتْ شعار موت المؤلف.
إذْ نتج عن هذه التيارات فراغ كبير في الدراسات التاريخية، حيث اعتبرت أبحاثاً مشبعة وليس هناك من وسيلة للإتكال أو الإتيان بجديد فيها، بينما في حقيقة الأمر لا يمكن للدراسات النّصيّة التي تتخذ هذه المناهج أن تغني عن منهجيات أخرى تربط الأعمال الأدبية بسياقاتها الثقافية والإجتماعية، وبخاصة بسياقاتها المتصلة بظروف المبدعين وأطوار حياتهم، ومحمود درويش واحد من الكبار المبدعين العرب الذين استطاعوا في فترة وجيزة أن يتمثل حضورهم بشكل واضح في الصف الأول من الشعراء العرب لأنه أصبح رمزاً لقضية هي في مركز الإهتمام العربي، وهي القضية الفلسطينية.
غير أنّ دراسة وقائع حياته وتجربته المباشرة، العاطفية والسياسية والإنسانية تصلح بالفعل لأن تكون مادة خصبة ومدخلاً جوهرياً، لا لفهم شعر محمود درويش فحسب، ولكن لفهم حركة الثقافة العربية في العقود الأخيرة أيضاً.
