عزيز العظمة هو كاتب ومفكر وباحث سوري ولد في دمشق عام 1947 م ، حاصل على شهادة الدكتوراه في العلوم الإسلامية من جامعة أكسفورد بعد أن تخرج منها، وكذلك درس في توبنغن في ألمانيا.
درّس في جامعات بيروت والكويت ومنذ 1985م عمل كبروفيسور للعلوم الإسلامية في جامعة الشارقة.

Book Description
يتحدث الكاتب عن محمد بن عبد الوهاب من خلال كتاباته التي هيأ له ان تكون في عصر ضربت فيه الحداثة فكراً وتصوراً وبدأت تعتمل سياسياً واجتماعياً، عصر الثورة الفرنسية وبوادر تحديث متفرقة في ديار الدولة العثمانية.
اتخذت الحركة الوهابية مساراً متعرجاً، وهي لم تنجح لأن النجاح كان مكتوباً لها في اللوح المحفوظ بل لأن التاريخ يسر لها سبل النجاح بشخصية استثنائية هي عبد العزيز بن سعود مؤسس المملكة العربية السعودية. في هذا الكتاب تبدو نصوص محمد بن عبد الوهاب في سعيها للبراءة الأصلية، فقيرة وقليلة الإطلاع، باعتبارها تمارين كتابية تعكس بيئة هامشية بعيدة عن التمدن ومنقطعة عن التراث الفكري للإسلام.
ويطالع عزيز العظمة كتابات ابن عبد الوهاب، انطلاقاً من مفارقة أنه كتب ونشط سياسياً في عصر ضربت فيه الحداثة فكراً وتصوراً وبدأت تعتمل سياسياً واجتماعياً: عصر الثورة الفرنسية وبوادر تحديث متبعثرة في ديار الدولة العثمانية، لكن محمد بن عبد الوهاب اكتفى بمعارف العصر الوسيط ككتاب المجسطي لبطليموس في وقت كانت الثورة العلمية قد تأسست على صورة ثابتة.
