ولد بحلب، وفيها تلقى تعليمه.
عمل في بيروت محرراً لمجلة «المكشوف»، وأصدر مع عمر فاخوري ورئيف خوري مجلة «الطريق»، وتولى رئاسة تحريرها من 1941- 1947، ثم تولى إدارة مكتب دار الهلال المصرية ومراسلة صحفها، ثم عمل مديراً للمكتب الصحفي في رئاسة الأركان السورية، وعاد بعدها ليصدر مجلة «الحرية»، ثم ليؤسس دار نشر باسم «دار الكاتب العربي».
له العديد من المؤلفات، منها: ـ أبو ذر الغفاري: أول ثائر في الإسلام.
ـ جمال الدين الأفغاني: حكيم الشرق.
ـ أشهر المحاكمات في التاريخ.
ـ محمد عبده: بطل الثورة الفكرية في الإسلام.

وقف المؤلف في كتابه هذا أمام تاريخ محمد بن عبد الوهاب، أمام تاريخ حافل بالأحاديث، متميز بالمغامرات، مترّج بالبطولات والمآثر والمفاخر قائم على عقيدة لا تميتها الهزات والترنحات، ولا تؤثر فيها العصبيات والقوميات، اشرب حبها القلوب، وتوارثها الخلف عن السلف أجيالاً بعد أجيال. ومثل هذه الصور والظواهر في كتابة التاريخ، لا يبرزها سرد الأحداث ولا منهج كتابة التاريخ للعهود، وإنما هي بحاجة إلى بسط البيان وتتوبع في الأسلوب وإفاضة في الدلالة بطريقة متأنية تشدّ القارئ وتستجلب رغبته، وتثير اهتمامه.
وهذا ما سعى إليه المؤلف في منهجيته في كتابه هذا، حيث هو أخذ القضية التاريخية هذه (الوهابية) ممهداً لها في شكل مقدمة بارعة موطئة لها بما يشف عنها ويجلوها، وربما سمح لخياله أن يخلق بما يحيط بالوهابية وبصاحبها من صور وتأملات ليتهدى بها القارئ إلى آفاق رحبة، ولكنها لا تنأى به عن الحقيقة ولا تسرف في الخيال لكي لا يعزّ الوصول إلى الهدف ولا يستغلق على المعنى. وربما سعى المؤلف إلى تطعيم عرضه بالشاهد والمثل من قول مأثور، أو شعر شارد أو مثل سائد، فيأتي تاريخ الوهابية رهواً منسجماً مع مقدمتها ومع نهايتها بدون أن يحس القارئ بالقلق أو بالنشاز. يقدم المؤلف تاريخه هذا بأسلوب سهل شيق ناصع سليم المأخذ أصيل المنبع، شاعري الجمل، متأنق الألفاظ، حتى ليخيل للقارئ أنه لا يقرأ تاريخاً وإنما يقرأ نثراً فنياً، يشبه نثر الجاحظ والرافعي والزيات.
