يعتبر السيد الحميري، أبو هاشم إسماعيل بن محمد من الشعراء المخضرَمين، إذ عاش عزّ الشباب والدولة الأموية إلى الاُفول، كما عاصر الدولة العباسية في أوج قوتها وشبابها حتى صار به العمر إلى سنّ الشيخوخة أو قريبٍ منه.
وهذه الفترة التي عاشها السيد من حياة الدولتين قد شهد فيها العالم الإسلامي أبشع صور الإضراب السياسي والنزف الدموي بحيث لم يكن له مثيل في التاريخ.
وقد جنّد السيد الحميري شعره وأدبه لأجل قضية مهمة أخذت حجمها السياسي والعقائدي في كل الأدوار والأعصر، هي مسألة الإمامة والخلافة، وأبرز شخصية سياسية دارت حولها بحوث الإمامة هي شخصية الإمام علي أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام.
وعليه، سعى المؤلف الدكتور عبد الرسول الغفاري إلى تناول شعر السيد الحميري في أمير المؤمنين وذلك لإعطاء صورة مجملة عن الحياة السياسية والإجتماعية والإدارية في الفترة الذي عاش بها الشاعر، وما رافق ذلك من أحداث وثورات وتقلب في الأوضاع.
