ولد محمد سعيد القدال بمدينة سنكات عام 1935م ، وتخرج في جامعة الخرطوم – كلية الآداب عام 1958م ، وفي عام 1964 حصل على درجة الماجستير من جامعة ولاية كلفورنيا ، وحصل على درجة الدكتوراة من جامعة الخرطوم ، وكان موضوع رسالة الدكتوراة عن "النظام الاقتصادي للدولة المهدية" ، والتى صدرت في كتاب بعنوان( السياسة الاقتصادية للدولة المهدية ) أعماله: له العديد من المؤلفات منها: 1.

تنبع أهمية العلاقة بين دولة المهدي والحبشة (أثيوبيا) من أنها كانت في العقدين الأخيرين من القرن الماضي، وهي الفترة التي احتدم فيها الصراع بين الدول الأوروبية في سعيها لاستعمار القارة الإفريقية، وبين الدول الأفريقية نفسها وهي تستبين معالم قوميتها وتسعى إلى إقامة كيانها السياسي.
وبما أن السياسة الخارجية لأية دول غالباً ما تكون انعكاساً للأوضاع الداخلية المتشعبة، فالعلاقة بين دولة المهدية والحبشة لا تستقيم بمعزل عن الظروف الداخلية التي اكتنفت البلدين. على أن هذه الدراسة تهتم أساساً بتحديد الاتجاهات العامة لدولة المهدية داخلياً وخارجياً وما ترتب عليها من ردود فعل داخل الحبشة. فالكتاب دراسة لدولة المهدية في منطقة القضارف -القلابات في شقه الأول لصلتها اللصيقة بالحبشة، ودراسة لعلاقة دولة المهدية بالحبشة في شقه الثاني.
