بدءاً بعنوانه "قراءات وإضاءات" يدل هذا الكتاب على سعة إطلاع المؤلف الأستاذ غسان كلاس، على ما ينشر أو ما نشر من مؤلفات ادبية وشعرية ونقدية، وتشهد مكتبته العامرة وما تحويه من آلاف الكتب والدوريات، أنه قارئ نهم، فهو يقتني كتبه لكي يكشف من خلالها أفكاراً وإبداعات أو دراسات، جديرة أن تزيد من معرفة القارئ، عندها يلجأ إلى قلمه بوصفه ناقداً متمرساً، لكي يرسم لنا على مرآة صفحات قليلة، ما اكتشفه من مواهب ومواقف، فيكون بذلك قد أوفى الكاتب حقه من التقدير، وأغنى القارئ بخلاصة ما اكتشفه من ثمرات الإبداع والدراسات، وتصبح حصيلة قراءاته وإضاءاته التي ظهرت في حينها مجزأة جديرة أن تنشر في كتاب جامع، هو الكتاب الذي نقدم له بتقدير كامل.
إن ما قدمه كان رسالة صادقة استخلصها من مفردات الكتب والمؤلفات التي اطلع عليها، ونقلها بأسلوب شائق وبنيّة خيرة، إلى القارئ الذي فاته أن يطلع عليها مجزّأة.
لقد أثبت المؤلف، من خلال ما نشره من إضاءات، أنه ناقد أدبي من طراز متميّز، فهو يرصد في عروضه الواضحة شعاعات مضيئة من المؤلفات التي كان قد قرأها، فيضعها بأمانة أمامنا لكي لا نكون بعيدين عن النص الأصلي بتركيبه البلاغي ومضمونه الفكري، ولم يسع إلى إفتعال إصطياد هنات لا تخلو من أي نص مهما كان مستواه الأدبي رفيعاً، لأنه حرص أولاً على الإعتراف بالجهد والموهبة تقديراً وتشجيعاً لمجموعة من الكتّاب الذين لم يلقوا حظاً كاملاً في التعريف بمؤلفاتهم، كما حرص أن يقف شاهداً على عبقرية شعراء وروائيين معروفين، مختاراً أثراً معيناً من آثارهم تكون دمشق الموضوع الأثير لديه.
ولعلي أزعم أن الكاتب غسان كلاس قد اختار في مؤلفه هذا أهم ما كتب عن الحياة في دمشق، من خلال رواية ألفة عمر باشا الأدلبي "يا بسمة الحزن" أو رواية معروف الأرنأوط "سيد قريش"، أو ما كتب عن تاريخ دمشق من خلال كتاب عبد العزيز العظمة "مرآة الشام".
ويتميز هذا الكتاب في إختيار مجموعة من شعراء الشام، خير الدين الزركلي، شفيق جبري، خليل مردم، محمد البزم، نزار قباني، وكمال فوزي الشرابي... الذين أوفوا دمشق حقها من الوصف والمديح، ولم ينس عرض أشعار فحول مصر، أحمد شوقي وأحمد رامي في أبياتهم الشعرية الصادقة في تكريم دمشق ورجالاتها.
