بحث الكثيرون بموضوع السيوطي ومنجزاته العلمية والتاريخية، والفقهية، والأدبية والنحوية واللغوية، وغيرها من العلوم المختلفة، وألَّفوا الكتب والمصنفات التي تدور حول منجزاته العلمية المختلفة، وقيل عنه الكثير، فمنهم من أنصفه وذكر مجهوداته الخارقة التي تنبئ عنها مؤلفاته الكثيرة التي وصلت إلى أكثر من (ألف) مصنف في مختلف ميادين العلوم والمعرفة، وقام هؤلاء العلماء بشرح بعضها والتعليق عليها، وقام آخرون بتحقيقها ودراستها بعناية ورعاية، وقال آخرون بأن السيوطي لم يكن إلا ناقلاً وجامعاً لآراء ونظريات من سبقه من العلماء.
وبغض النظر عن ذلك، فإن مؤلفات السيوطي المطبوع منها والمخطوط، هي مستودع يحفظ نظريات أولئك العلماء وأفكارهم وجهودهم وبخاصة في مجالات اللغة والنحو، من أمثال الخليل بن أحمد وسيبويه وابن الأنباري والكسائي والمبرد، وأبي حيان، وابن جنى وغيرهم من شيوخ وأعلام المدرستين، وإن من قال بأن إعتماده على النقل في كتبه، إعتماداً كلياً، فذلك لا يُقَلِّلُ من أهمية مؤلفاته، لأن جمعه هذه المسائل والقضايا والمعلومات المتفرقة لآراء هؤلاء العلماء، ينبئ عن سعة إطلاعه وجهوده الواسعة وثقافته غير المحدودة، مما جعله يمتاز بقدرة فائقة على جميع مختلف العلوم والقضايا في باب واحد، وكثيراً ما كان يميل إلى رأي من هذه الآراء أو يتخذ لنفسه موقفاً محدداً.
وعليه، يبحث هذا الكتاب في موقف جلال الدين السيوطي من المدارس النحوية والقضايا اللغوية وذلك في خمسة أبواب يتضمن كل باب عدة فصول، وقد اعتمد المؤلف في مادة بحثه على معظم مؤلفات السيوطي في اللغة والنحو، وعلى معظم ما كتب بحثه في مختلف المجالات اللغة والنحو والتصريف وغيرها من موضوعات الفقه والحديث والتفسير.
