جورج ويلهلم فريدريش هيغل (بالألمانية: Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel) (ولد 27 أغسطس 1770 — 14 نوفمبر 1831) فيلسوف ألماني ولد في شتوتغارت، فورتيمبيرغ، في المنطقة الجنوبية الغربيةِ من ألمانيا.
يعتبر هيغل أحد أهم الفلاسفة الألمان حيث يعتبر أهم مؤسسي حركة الفلسفة المثالية الألمانية في أوائل القرن التاسع عشر الميلادي.

حسمت أوروبا الاستعمارية أواخر القرن الثامن عشر أمر سيطرتها على العالم. وبات لزاماً عليها فهم أوليات اشتغال المجتمعات التي استتبعتها أخضعتها بالقوة العسكرية ليتسنى لهل عضونتها في أوالياتها الخاصة وتأييد عملية الإستتباع التي ستغدو في القرن التاسع عشر ذاتية التموين: أي أن التبعية نتج تلقائياً عناصر استمرارها وتعقيمها.
في هذا الخضم، شاعت الإستشراقية على مختلف المستويات: الفلسفية والأدبية والتاريخية والاجتماعية، حتى طالت كافة النواحي الحضارية للمجتمعات الشرقية، وكان رائد الفكر الفلسفي الألماني أوائل القرن التاسع ج.ف.ف هيجل أبرز من تصدى لتحليل وتشريح بنية الحضارات الشرقية وطباع الشرقيين والعناصر المكونة لشخصيتهم وأبرز سمات هذه الشخصية والمحطات الرئيسية في سلكة تطور تاريخ المجتمعات الشرقية من الصين إلى مصر مروراً بالهند وبلاد فارس والحضارات الفينيقية والآشورية والبابلية.
لا يغيب عن بال أي من الدارسين للنتاجات الفكرية الأوروبية في القرن التاسع عشر تمحورها حول مركزية "الأنا" الأوروبية، وإن هذه النتاجات هي التي أسست للفكر العنصري الأوروبي،÷ وإن الفكر الهيجلي بالإمكان تقديمه كنموذج لهذا الانزلاق بيد أن الضرورة العلمية تقضي الفتاح إمام بتوضيح أفكار هيجل وخلفياتها العنصرية بشكل رائع من خلال تقديمه للكتاب، ومن خلال التعليقات التي أوردها في الحواشي حتى بات كتاباً مرجعياً يوفر على قارئه الكثير من العناء. مما جعله بمتناول القارىء المهتم، أكان متخصصاً أو غير متخصص.
