وقبل الشروع في توضيح مكانة المعرفة في الفلسفة الأوروبية المعاصرة وبيان آراء فلاسفتها المعاصرين، لا بد من الوقوف على أهم التعريفات التي ذكروها في نظرية المعرفة، ذلك التعريف المصطلحي المركب من لفظين معاً تركيباً إضافياً (نظرية ومعرفة): فالنظرية: لفظ يطلق بوجه عام على ما يوضح الأشياء والظواهر، توضيحاً لا يعول على الواقع، أو هي فرض علمي يربط أواصر عدة قوانين ببعضها، ويردها إلى مبدأ واحد يمكن أن نستنبط منه حتماً أحكاماً وقواعد مثل: نظرية الذرة.
