ألان باتون هو أديب مبدع من جنوب أفريقيا، أخذت أعماله الأدبي منحى سياسياً واجتماعياً، فكانت سجلاً اجتماعياً صادقاً عكس المشكلات العميقة التي كان يعاني منها مجتمع بلاده الحديث، حيث عودت قلة من المعمرين البيض إلى امتلاك معظم الثروات واضطهاد غالبية السكان السود الملونين البالغ عددهم نحو عشرة ملايين نسمة، نشر في العام 1948 رواية الأولى "ابك البلد الحبيب" فلاقت على الفور ترحيباً شعبياً لتعاطفها مع الواقعين في شرك الصراع العنصري، واكتسبت على أثره شهرة عالمية، فترجمت إلى لغات عدة منها العربية، حوّلت في العام 1949، إلى أوبرا غنائية "تائهون في النجوم "Lostin stars" وضع ألحانها الموسيقار الألماني-الأميركي الشهير "كورت فيل"، وصارت في العام 1952 شريطاً سينمائياً بعنوانها الأصلي. وفي هذا الكتاب وردت الرواية بنصيها الإنكليزي والعربي، وهي موجهة للناشئة للإطلاع على هذا العمل الأدبي الذي يعد من روائع الأدب العالمي.
