لم تكن صورة الأرض في البلاد العربية ولا في غيرها من جهات العالم بالشكل الذي هي عليه الآن في كل المراحل التي مرّ بها تطور العلاقات بين اليابس والماء. حيث ترجع أقدم أجزاء القشرة الأرضية إلى ما قبل الكمبري، وصخورها في العادة نارية أو متحولة. ونظراً لقدمها أصبحت ذات صلابة خاصة، ومن ثم فإن الالتواءات التي حدثت بعد الكمبري لم تؤثر فيها، واقتصرت، إن وجدت، على هوامشها، ولكنها تعرضت من جهة أخرى للانكسارات والاندفاعات، وليس معنى هذا أن دورها كان سلبياً، فلم يتعداها إلى غيرها؛ بل على العكس كان لها دور إيجابي لا يمكن إغفاله.
ضمن هذا الإطار تأتي الدراسة في هذا المجلد. وهي دراسة مختصرة للوطن العربي تتناول معالمه الجغرافية الرئيسية من جانبها الطبيعي والبشري. وقد قسّم المؤلف المجلد إلى كتابين. خصص الأول منها للبحث في الجغرافية الطبيعية من حيث البناء الجيولوجي، المناخ، الأقاليم الطبيعية (الجزيرة العربية، أراضي الرافدين، بلاد الشام، حوض النيل، ليبيا والصحراء الأفريقية، المغرب العربي). أما الكتاب الثاني فقد تمّ فيه البحث في الإنتاج الزراعي في الوطن العربي (التربة، الماء، الحبوب الغذائية، السكر، الزيوت النباتية، نباتات الألياف، الفواكه، الثروة الحيوانية).
