يعتبر فن الزخرفة جزءاً هاماً من موروث تاريخنا الفني الهام في الحضارة العربية الإسلامية, ولقد كان من الطبيعي أن يرث الفن الإسلامي مجمل ما كان قبله من الفنون وأن ينتخب ما كان منها صالحاً لربطه برؤيته الخاصة للوجود ويفتح في وجه الشعوب الجديدة التي دخلت وانضوت تحت لوائه سبل إبداع جديدة لم تكن لتعرفها. وتعود بداية الزخرفة الفنية المجردة في بلادنا السورية تعود إلى خمسة آلاف سنة قبل الميلاد وتحمل أهم عناصر الزخرفة وهي الوحدة والتكرار, وتمثل سمة من سمات الفن السوري القديم. وإن الدولة الأموية التي تعتبر المؤسسة الرائدة لهذا الفن, لم لتأخذه من بيزنطة أو روما, وإنما دخل الفنان السوري في الإسلام, فقرأ القرآن واطلع على القيم الجمالية الساحرة فيه, وعاد إلى ماضيه يستلهم منه, ووجد في الإسلام متنفساً لما كان قد بدأه فحقق التناسب والجمال والروعة, واسترسل في خياله ليبدع آلاف الأشكال من المربع والمثلث والدائرة. والإسلام يشهد أن الجمال برهان إلهي والزهرة اليانعة تسبيح والزخرفة تسبيح عميق تتعدد مظاهره, ويملأ الكون مردداً الصدى دوام الخالق وزوال العالم. ويتحدث هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا عن التخطيطات الناظمة, ورباعية بيثاغورس, والمربع الفيدي. ويعرض لكثير من الزخارف الهندسية من العصور الإسلامية. حيث يحرص على عدم الاستفاضة في الشرح والتعليق تاركاً للوحات الفنية والرسومات البيانية أن تتحدث بنفسها عن هذا الفن الأصيل.
