تعتبر قصائد الشاعر متمم بن نويرة اليربوعي من عيون التراث العربي القديم فقصائده أنشدت بين يدي أبي بكر الصديق وعمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنهما، وحملت في تضاعيفها ودلالاتها قيم لغوية وفنية فريدة من حيث التشبيهات والإستعارات والمجازات وغيرها.
في هذا الكتاب دراسة في النقد الأدبي التطبيقي تتلمس التذوق الجمالي لقصائد متمم بن نويرة الثلاث 1- "لعمري وما دهري بتأبين هالك... فأوجعا"، 2- أرقت ونام الأخلياء وهاجني... وجيع"، 3- "صرمت زنيبة حبل من لا يقطع... تفجع" أعد الدراسة الدكتور محمد علي أبو حمدة يستنطق من خلالها تلك النصوص عبر وقفات ذاتية خاصة، يستشعر حلاوتها من واقعها، إنها الذاتية الفردية بكل ما للذاتية من تغردٍ في التكوين الفكري والثقافي ولطرائق التفكير ودرجة الإحساس بالجماليات والإستجابة لها. ذلك هو أفق المشاعر الذي وطأ لرسالة الإسلام –في المنافسة التي تحبب لكل من اتصل بهذه اللغة الشريفة بسببٍ أن يعاود قراءة الشعر بعيونٍ جديدة.
وبالنظر إلى ما تقدم اعتمد المؤلف في دراسته شرح العلامة أبي محمد القاسم بن محمد بن بشار الأنباري على ديوان المفضليات للمفضل بن محمد بن يعلى الضبي، وما جاء مبثوثاً في المظان الأدبية، وقد عبر عن ذلك بقوله: "كنت أقلب الأمر من وجوهه المختلفة، وأعطي كل صاحب فضلٍ حقه، وكان يكون لي الرأي الواحد في الفهم، والتذوق، والربط، والإختيار، مع تقديم العلل والأسباب، وسوق الأدلة والمسوغات، مع ترك الباب مفتوحاً لمزيدٍ من الوضوح، والإضافة والإضاءة النقدية الكاشفة".
