يتناول المؤلف في هذا حياة الإمام جلال الدين السيوطي: عبد الرحمن بن الكمال أبي بكر بن محمد بن سابق الدين بن الشيخ همام الدين الهمام الخضيري الأسيوطي. والذي قدم بترجمة لنفسه بنفسه في كتابه "حسن المحاضرة في أخبار مصر والقاهرة" وذلك اقتداءً بالمحدثين قبله. والإمام السيوطي علم من أعلام الثقافة الإسلامية، ذلك أن كتبه ملء الأسماع ونور البصائر، ومؤلفاته زاد للنفوس، وريّ للقلوب، وهي من التنوع والكثرة بحيث تشمل العديد من العلوم والفنون، فللسيوطي إسهاماً وافراً في علوم القرآن، والتفسير، والحديث، والفقه، والأصول، والتاريخ، والطبقات، والتراجم، والرحلات، واللغة، والنحو، والبلاغة، والأدب، والطب وغيرها.
والسيوطي في كل ما يصدر عنه من مؤلفات يبدو وكأن الصفة الموسوعية قد فرضت نفسها عليه فرضاً، فهو على سبيل المثال يكتب التاريخ بعقلية الفقيه إذا ما احتاج الجنرال تدليل أو تحليل أو تعليل، ويفسر القرآن الكريم بأمانة المحدث، ويؤلف في اللغة مستنيراً بنهج رجال الحديث تارة، وطريقة الأصوليين تارة أخرى وسبيل الفقهاء تارة ثالثة وهكذا... على أن الباحث وحين يتبع مؤلفات الإمام الجليل في مختلف مظانها، يستطيع تصنيفها تحت سبعة عناوين هي: علوم القرآن والتفسير، الحديث النبوي الشريف، الفقه، علوم العربية، التاريخ والطبقات، الأدب، موضوعات مختلفة. وقد بلغت مؤلفاته ستمائة، وقيل ألفاً، وما زالت المشارق والمغارب تجلس إلى مؤلفاته لتتعلم وتتعجب. فهو نادرة زمانه وأعجوبة عصره، فكان حقيقاً أن يخصص له هذا الكتاب، ليعلم الناس أن لله عباداً علماء وأن الفضل بيد الله يؤتيه من يشاء.
