يجد الباحثون وعلماء النفس صعوبة بالغة في تناول موضوع كالأخلاق، لا يمكن بحثه بواسطة الأدلة والتجربة. ومع ذلك فقد سعى المؤلفان وبشيء من التبسيط والإيضاح إلى البحث في أسس السلوك الخلقي ونموه عند الأطفال. وقد كان هذا عملاً غير تقليدي إذ لم يكن أحد من علماء النفس قد تناول بالدقة والتفصيل موضوع الأخلاق من وجهة نظر سيكولوجية حيث يسود شعور عميق لدى العملاء والباحثين بأن القيم الخلقية ترتبط بالأخلاق أو بالأديان والثقافات وأن أي حكم تصدره سوف يفتقر إلى الموضوعية والصدق.
إن المؤلفين (نورمان وسيشلاويليافر) يميزان بين استخدامين رئيسيين لكلمة (أخلاقي)، فهناك معنى تقويمي، كما في قولنا (هذا رجل أخلاقي)، ومعنى آخر وهو ما يسمى بالاستعمال الوصفي، كقولنا (لقد واجه فلان اختيراً خلقياً). ويعتقد المؤلفان أننا لا نستطيع أن نضع الناس في فئات مميزة بحده للأخلاق الطيبة والأخلاق السيئة. كما إنهما يميزان بين الضمير كشعور غير عقلي حدسي بالصواب والخطأ. وبين الضمير كخبرة من خبرات الذنب. وفي إطار البحث في موضوع النمو الخلقي يرى المؤلفان أن الجوانب المختلفة من النمو الخلقي لا يمكن النظر إليها بمعزل عن بعضها ولا يمكن أيضاً فصل النمو الخلقي عن إطار النمو العام للطفل. النمو العقلي والاجتماعي والانفعالي متصل بها لدرجة ما.
كما عرض المؤلفان للنمو الروحي الخلقي والتنشئة الاجتماعية في مرحلتي الطفولة والمراهقة إذ يؤكد أن الدين لا تقتصر آثاره ووظائفه على مرحلة واحدة من مراحل العمر وإنما يشمل أثره كافة مراحل النمو الإنساني وإن كان هذا التأثير يختلف من مرحلة إلى أخرى. وقد أرفق المترجم الدكتور عبد الرحمن عيسوي دراسة تجريبية قام بها لقياس الاتجاهات الخلقية لدى الشباب والمراهقين العرب اعتمد فيها على تصميم مقياس على طريقة ترستون بعد أن قام بإدخال بعض التعديلات على منهجه الأصلي.
