لا ريب في أنّ ظاهرة الخلاف في النحو العربي من أبرز ما تناول الدرس النحوي قديماً وحديثاً، فقد عرض لها الباحثون على نطاق واسع، وناقشوها، وبسطوا القول فيها، واختلفت مناهجهم في ذلك، وتعددت، فكان نتاج ذلك كله مؤلفات عديدة أسهمت في إستكمال بناء نظرية النحو العربي.
ومما يسترعي الإنتباه أن كثيراً من هؤلاء الباحثين قصروا دراساتهم، في الغالب، على الخلاف بين النحويين البصريين والكوفيين، على أن الأبحاث التي قدمها الباحثون، سواء أكانت في النحو البصري، أم في النحو الكوفي، لم يكن أحدها ليختصّ بالخلاف النحوي الكوفي وحده، ولم تكن تهدف إلى إبراز هذا الخلاف، والكشف عن ظواهره إلاّ إذا كان وراء ذلك مقصد يخدم ما ترمي إليه ككتاب (مدرسة الكوفة) لمهدي المخزومي وكتاب (مدرسة البصرة) لعبد الرحمن السيد، وكتاب (المدارس النحوية) لشوقي ضيف، وكتاب (أبو زكريا القراء ومذهبه في دراسة النحو واللغة)، لأحمد مكي الأنصاري وكتاب (المدرسة البغدادية) لمحمود حسني، وكتاب (المدارس النحوية أسطورة وواقع) لإبراهيم السامرائي، وغيرها...
لذلك بدت عناية هذه الدراسات بالخلاف النحوي الكوفي عناية سريعة مقتضبة.
وبناءً على ما تقدم، فإن هدفي في هذه الدراسة أن أستقصي الفروق بين نحاة الكوفة، وأن أرصد ظواهر الخلاف النحوي بينهم، رصداً شاملاً جامعاً، وأن أكشف عن مواردها، وأن أردّ كل رأي إلى صاحبه، وأن أمحّص آراءهم، مما نسب إليهم، ولم يكن لهم ما استطعت إلى ذلك سبيلاً، على الرغم من تشتت المادة، وقلة المصادر النحوية الكوفية.
