في عمله الروائي "حانة الحي القريبة" يصطنع قبيلات نموذجاً للقص، جديداً في ثيمته وفي تقنياته، وبكل تفاصيله وتشظياته، وفي نزوعه نحو الإثارة والإدهاش، الذي يجعلنا نرافق الموتى في سؤالهم ماذا حلَ بالبلاد بعد موتهم، متخذاً من حياة كاتب متفرغ اعتاد الجلوس يومياً في (حانة الحي القريبة)، ودهشه من قبل عربة عندما... كان يجتاز الطريق إلى الحانة ثم موته؛ معادلاً رمزياً؛ لكل ما يحصل للناس العاديين والثقفين المناوئين للسلطات من مضايقات. ففي ثنايا الرواية سنجد (أزواجاً تعساء) موظفين تخنقهم الحياة، وأفواجاً من المخذولين، يتعجلون بالوصول إلى بيوتهم، هاربين كقطيع مذعور)، إلى درجة تجعل الأموات في القبور حسن حالاً منهم "سأجد قبراً احتمي فيه من كل هؤلاء الأحياء المذعورين!".
في ظل هذا الواقع القاتم تقبع الرواية، في مساراتها المفترقة، ومصائرها السلبية، ولتقول بالوقائع وبالأحداث باستحالة الاستمرار، في مثل تلك الظروف، سواء بالنسبة للضحية أو الجلاد...
