يحتوي الكتاب بين دفتيه ما تقرر في منهج طلاب مرحلة الدروس الثانوية، ودور المعلمين والمعلمات والجامعات في لبنان، من علوم المعاني والبيان، وأصول الفن والجمال، ومبادئ التحليل ولا يخفى ما لهذه العلوم من أهمية بالغة في دراسة الأدب قديمة وحديثة. فهي تساعد الطالب على تزوقه وتفهم محاسنه، تفهماً تاماً، لا يقتصر على تصور المعنى العام لكل نص أدبي، بل يتخطاه إلى معرفة خصائصه ومزاياه الفنية، بما فيها من قبح وجمال، على ضوء البحث والتحليل، وذلك بغية الوصول إلى تكوين ذوق أدبي، ناضج وسليم، لدى جميع الطلاب وتدريبهم تدريباً كافياً على التزام ما يكونون قد درسوه من أساليب وأحكام، في التعبير عما يريدون إنشاءه من الكلام.
وقد اعتمد على تضمين هذا الكتاب المعلومات الأساسية الضرورية، في البلاغة والتحليل مع تخصيص التفاصيل في ركن خاص، للراغبين في التعمق. ولم يغفل عن إثبات بعض النصوص الأدبية المأخوذة من صميم المنهاج، والمتعلقة تعلقاً مباشراً، بالموضوع المبحوث، واتباعها أسئلة في القواعد والمعاني والبيان، على نحو ما تفرضه مسابقة البلاغة والتحليل في الامتحان، مع الإشارة إلى المآخذ والعيوب التي تشوّه إنشاء التلاميذ، وإلى المبادئ الجمالية في الإنشاء. كما روعي تنويع التمارين والتطبيقات التي تدور حول نصوص أو عبارات أدبية كاملة، وجعل الفرض منها اختبار الذوق والحس الفني، بما يبدو فيها من الجدّة والطرافة، والبعد عن الصيغ المألوفة، وبذل قصارى الجهد في أن يكون للأدب الحديث نصيب وافر من هذه التمارين.
