يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى مقاربة إشكالية تتعلق بــ"الأخلاق على نحو إتيقي"، والتي لم ترسم مباحثها عند الفلاسفة المسلمين على غرار المكانة التي احتلتها سائر المباحث الأخرى... على إعتبار أن ما أرخ للفلاسفة المسلمين في الغالب هو تكرار فرضية إهتمامهم بما كتب "أرسطو - المعلم الأول" عن الإلهيات والطبيعيات والمنطق... وعزوفهم عن الأخلاقيات بفرضية أن الدين والأخلاق شيئاً واحداً، أو أنهما يؤديان وظيفة واحدة... مما ينم في إعتقادنا عن التداخل الكبير بين الديني والأخلاقي والديني والفلسفي... وعدم تمييز الحدود الفاصلة بينهما معرفياً، في مقابل الحدود الواضحة في الفلسفة الإغريقية، (سواء بين الحقول المعرفية المتعددة أو بين الفلاسفة أنفسهم).
وبفرضية أخرى مفادها، أن الأخلاق لا تبحث ما هو واقع وتحلله، بل تبحث فيما يجب أن نصير إليه ونحققه، وبالتالي الجانب العملي في الأخلاق كان ولا يزال من مهام غير الفلاسفة، وما يبرر هذه الفرضية الأخيرة، يتمثل في قلة نفوذ الفلاسفة المسلمين في فتح وتحرير مجال الأخلاق من قبضة رجال الدين (الفقهاء) مما أضعف تأهيلهم في تأسيس مبحثاً مستقلاً في الأخلاق على ضرب مما تفوقوا فيه في المباحث المعرفية الأخرى.
الشيء الذي ضيّق من المجال الأخلاقي كموضوع مستقل، إلاّ ما جاء في بعض من الرسائل والفصول لدى "بن مسكويه والعامري وابن عدي والغزالي"...
من ذات الدوافع، كانت نصوص لفارابي إعادة تأملية تحليلية لحالة الخروج بالعقل (في فهم الفارابي) من الضروري إلى الممكن في ميدان الإتيقا، واضعين في الإعتبار فلسفته الغائية التأملية والموجّهة في بعض جوانبها لإنفتاح العقل في المساحة الأخلاقية على نحو إتيقي، وربطه للعقل النظري (في تحديده الإغريقي) بالعقل العملي (التعاملي) في مجال الأخلاق.
ومن ثم، بحث المسلّمة الفارابية القائلة: "إن الإتيقا تشوق كل إنسان إلى السعادة والسعي نحوها على أنها كمال ماله "هي قدرة على" الإستكمال" والإستيلاء على الممكن الذي فيه، في مقابل أخلاق "الملة" وتلك هي المفارقة التي سعى إلى تأسيسها، بإعتبار الإتيقا انطولوجيا متغيرة... في أفعال البشر وتشوقاتهم وإستعدادهم حسب إعتقاده.
