كان الفارابي رجلاً منزوياً يعيش حياة فلسفية، موقفاً عمره للعلم والتعلم والتعليم، قيل أنه تزيا بزي التصوف في أواخر عمره. لُقِّبَ الفارابي بلقب المعلم الثاني لأنه كانت يعير أهمية كبيرة نحو فن المنطق أيضاً لا سيما البرهان والعلم البرهاني، ولأنه انبرى إلى جمع الآثار المنطقية وعموماً الآراء الفلسفية لا سيما آراء أرسطو المترجمة وقام بتهذيبها وتفسيرها بطريقته الخاصة. ومهما كانت بواعث تلقيب الفارابي بلقب المعلم الثاني، فمما لا شك فيه أنه مؤسس الفلسفة الإسلامية وليس بمستوى شارح للفلسفة اليونانية. فبعد أن تعلم الفلسفة اليونانية والعلوم الإسلامية المتداولة في عصره، انبرى لتعزيز موقع الفلسفة وإثبات أنه لا يمكن التوصل إلى الحقائق إلا عن طريق الفلسفة والعلم البرهاني، وإذا ما كان هناك اختلاف بين الفلاسفة في بعض المسائل؛ فإنما هو اختلاف في ظاهر أقوالهم في حين أن الجميع لديهم هدف واحد.
وحول الفارابي مؤسس الفلسفة الإسلامية يدور هذا الكتاب. والكتاب لا يتحدث كثيراً عن آراء الفارابي وأفكاره، وإنما يركز اهتمامه على مكانته والفترة التاريخية التي ظهرت فيها آراؤه ، لبيان مكانته كفيلسوف إسلامي متميز. وقد تطرق المؤلف لهذا الغرض إلى إلقاء الضوء على الفلسفة اليونانية إلى حدّ ما، مع بيان كيفية وصولها إلى العالم الإسلامي. بالإضافة إلى ذلك تمّت الإشارة إلى أهم الموضوعات الأساسية في فلسفة الفارابي، وهو بحث العلاقة بين الدين والفلسفة، وآراؤه في المدينة الفاضلة. هذا وقد ولى المؤلف اهتماماً خاصاً نحو العلاقة بين الدين والفلسفة مبيناً أهمية هذه المسألة في الفلسفة الإسلامية.
