تجمع هذه المذكرات بين السيرة الذاتية وتسجيل أحداث خطيرة وقعت في بغداد يوم 14 تموز 1958 المشؤوم، وكان المؤلف شاهداً عليها ومن أبرز تلك الأحداث التي مست حياة المؤلف ما جرى للمرحوم نوري السعيد وكيف خرج من دار المؤلف في كرادة مريم يوم 14 تموز قبل أن يدخل العسكريون إليه؟ وإلى أين اتجه؟ ومن آواه في ذلك اليوم؟ ثم كيف تم نقله إلى دور آل البصام في الكاظمية وما هي المساعي التي بذلت لإقناعه بالتوجه إلى الأردن حفظاً لسلامته في صبيحة يوم 15 تموز 1958 ثم كانت نهايته الأليمة في ذلك اليوم. لقد كان الدكتور صالح البصام وسط هذه الأحداث بحكم الجوار وبدافع النخوة والحرص على حياة رجل كبير ولإنقاذ الوضع فلحقه من الأذى والقلق والتهجير وعرضت حياته للخطر، صم وجهت للدكتور البصام تهمة تهريب وإخفاء نوري السعيد وسجن وقدم للمحاكمة وحكن عليه بالسجن.
ويروي المؤلف هذه الأحداث بدقة وأمانة معلومات جدية وفريدة من نوعها تنشر لأول مرة وتصدر من شاهد عيان ومساهم شخصياً فيها.
يحتوي الكتاب إلى جانب ذلك لمحات عن الحياة الاجتماعية والسياسية في العراق قبل أحداث 14 تموز 1958 الدامية وينوه بالدسائس التي كانت تحاك ضد النظام الملكي وأهل العراق من قبل جهات عديدة من ضمنها كانت تعتبر حليفة أو صديقة ومشاركة في النظام.
إنه كتاب ممتع ومساهم جديد في تاريخ العراق الحديث.
