عبد المالك مرتاض (ولد 10 أكتوبر 1935) أستاذ جامعي وأديب جزائري حاصل على الدكتوراة في الأدب. ولد في مسيردة بولاية تلمسان. رئيس المجلس الأعلى للغة العربية (2001م). ويشغل حاليا 2011 كأستاذ لمقياس الأدب الجزائري، من أهم صفاته بين طلبته تواضعه وسمته يعد مرجعا في الدراسات الأدبية والنقدية. كان عضوا في لجنة التحكيم لمسابقة شاعر المليون التي أقيمت في أبو ظبي.

ليس يوجَد جنسٌ أدبيٌّ عُنِيَتْ به النَّقَدَةُ، ولا غَرِيَتْ به الدَّرَسَة، ولا حَفَلَهُ الرُّواةُ وأُوُلُو الأخبارِ، ولا احتفى به في مجالسهِمُ النَّدامَى والسُّمَارُ، لَدُنْ كافّةِ الأُمم، وعَبْر جميعِ الأَعصار: كالشِّعر.
ذلكم، وقد كان سبق لنا بعضُ الحديث عن ميلاد الشعر الأوّل في مقدّمة كتابنا المنشور بهذا العنوان نفسِهِ (أي "الشعرُ الأوّل"، وقبله كتابنا "السبع المعلّقات"): مُنذُ لَدُنْ كَتبْنا ذلك، مَيْدَ أَنا، هنا، إنّما نسعى إلى الرجوع، قَهْقرةً، إلى الحافرة الضّاربة في القِدم، أي الإيغال في أعماق أواخيّ الزمن المتجذّرة، للشرَأَبِيبَة إلى معرفة سيرة هذه النشأة التي لا يعرفها، في حقيقة الأمر، ومن الوجهة التاريخيّة الدقيقة، دَيَارٌ! وهو شأنٌ لم نَأْتُهُ هناك.
فارتأينا هُنا، أن نستدرك ما فاتنا هَنَّا، لنسوقَ حديثاً عن أوائل الشعر العربيّ، من وجهة نظرٍ ربما لم نُسبَق لبعضِها.
