يدرس المؤلف في هذا الكتاب خلفيات، وأسباب، وتطور، ونتائج ثورة 1936- 1939 في فلسطين، مركزاً بشكل خاص على بُعدها العسكري.
ويعتمد الكاتب على الوثائق العسكرية البريطانية، وتقارير قادة القوات والشرطة البريطانية إلى وزارتي الحربية والمستعمرات، بالإضافة إلى العديد من الوثائق المنشورة وغير المنشورة، وهو يرسم صورة ما جرى على مسرح العمليات، ويتناول التنظيمات العسكرية الفلسطينية بتشكيلاتها وقياداتها وإستراتيجياتها وتكتيكاتها وأسلحتها.
ويدرس الكاتب أيضاً طبيعة حرب العصابات ويفصّل بعض أهم العمليات التي خاضها الثوار في المدن والريف، والنتائج التي حققتها، ثم يتناول الإجراءات البريطانية المضادة ودور القوات اليهودية والعملاء المحليين، ثم ينهي دراسته بخلاصة وتقييم لما حققته الثورة وما لم تحققه، ولإنعكاساتها على تطور الأحداث التي انتهت بنكبة 1948.
