يحاول المؤلف في هذا الكتاب تنمية المهارات الكتابية، في جوانبها الموضوعية والفنية مسترشداً بما وضعه علماء هذه الأمة من السلف، وآخذاً من آراء المحدثين الذين كان لهم فضل الريادة في التصدي لقضية مهمة أصبحت في وقتنا الحاضر تمثل مشكلة خطيرة، فإذا كان السابقون يستعينون على قضاء حوائجهم الكتابية بطفل يخط الكتابة، فيحسن ما يُطلب منه، فإنّك في وقتنا الحاضر قد تجد من تخرّج في الجامعة، وهو يحسّ بالخجل إذا ما طُلب منه أن يُقدّم معروضاً، أو أن يكتب رسالة معبرة.
وبما أنَّ التعليم النظري وحده ليس كافياً، فقد ركز المؤلف على الإتيان بنماذج متعدّدة لكل نوع من أنواع الكتابة الموضوعية والفنية، وفي محاولة لضبط الأداة فقد عرض لعلامات الترقيم كلون من ألوان الإستعادة والتذكير.
تحدث المؤلف في المقدمة عن موضوع هذا الكتاب، ثم عرض في الباب الأول: لمكونات البناء الأسلوبي بدءاً من الحرف، ومروراً باللفظة، والجملة، والفقرة، وإنتهاءً بعلامات الترقيم؛ وفي الباب الثاني: في الموضوع، عرض لجملة من الموضوعات الإجرائية التي يحتاجها الطالب أياً كان تخصصه، وهذه الموضوعات هي: العرض والتقويم، والتقرير، والتلخيص، والرسالة، والمحاضرة، والندوة، وكلمات خاصة، والدورات القصيرة، وأنهى ذلك بالحديث عن البحث العلمي؛ وفي الباب الثالث: في الفن، بحث في: المقالة، والقصة، والرواية، والمسرحية، والشعر، وختم ذلك بخاتمة، وفهارس الكتاب.
