يهدف إلى شرح عملية التحول الإقتصادي المعقدة التي حدثت في الأناضول ومصر والولايات العربية، التابعة للإمبراطورية العثمانية فيما بين عام 1800 وبداية الحرب العالمية الأولى عام 1914، وذلك بالنظر إلى الشرق الأوسط كجزء من العالم الثالث، يخضع للكثير من التغيرات نفسها التي تركت تأثيرها على أجزاء أخرى في آسيا وأفريقيا وأمريكا اللاتينية، خلال الفترة نفسها، وليس كمكان شديد الخصوصية يمتلك قوانين خاصة لحركته.
والمنهج العام المستخدم في الكتاب، هو منهج ينظر إلى الشرق الأوسط كجزء من الإقتصاد العالمي، وبالتالي فهو خاضع للضغوط العامة للرأسمالية والإمبريالية، وعملية التحول الإقتصادي التي حدثت قد تأثرت بالبنى المحلية بالقدر الذي تأثرت فيه بالضغط الخارجي، لكن المنطقة لم تتعرض لعملية التغيير الشامل الذي يتعذر إلغاؤه، والذي هو الموضوع الرئيسي للكتاب إلا بعد الثورتين: الثورة السياسية في فرنسا، والثورة الصناعية في بريطانيا.
