يصور هذا الكتاب سيرورة إنتقال الإقتصاد الشرق أوسطي من إقتصاد تقليدي متأخر مكتف ذاتياً إلى إقتصاد كولونيالي متخلف وتابع بفعل الإكتساح الغربي العسكري والإقتصادي والإجتماعي.
يحلل المؤلف في البداية سيرورة تفسخ البنية السياسية والإجتماعية والإقتصادية للمجتمع العثماني (وبالتالي العربي)، ثم يتحدث عن محاولات الإصلاح العثمانية التي حاولت عبثاً تجديد بنية المجتمع العثماني والعربي.
وينتقل المؤلف بعد ذلك إلى تحليل تجربة محمد علي باشا، المحاولة الأولى للنهضة العربية الحديثة، ويبين كيف أسهم الإستعمار، فضلاً عن عدم نضج البنى الإجتماعية والفكرية النضج الكافي، في القضاء على هذه المحاولة، ثم يتابع تحليل سير تحول الإقتصاد والمجتمع المصري، مع الإحتلال الإنكليزي لمصر وبسببه، إلى إقتصاد تابع ومتخلف.
وأخيراً يفرد المؤلف دراسة طويلة للإقتصاد والمجتمع العربي في سوريا ولبنان وشرقي الأردن والعراق، بدءاً من الإجتياح الإستعماري وصولاً إلى الحرب العالمية الثانية.
