تجري أحداث هذه الرواية في بداية السبعينات من القرن العشرين، في القارة الأفريقية بين الكاميرون والتشاد والسودان والصحراء الكبرى وصولاً إلى البحر الأحمر، الشخصيتان الأساسيتان في هذه الأحداث هما مصور أوروبي وزوجته الأفريقية التي تحكمها أفكار نبيلة تعمل من خلالها للفت انتباه العالم إلى بلدها الأفريقي الصغير الغارق في الفقر والبؤس والأمراض. عند وصولها إلى أفريقيا مع زوجها، بعد الانتهاء من دراستها في باريس ولندن، في رحلة شهر عسل، يختطفها أحد تجار العبيد كي يتم بيعها إلى أحد الأمراء. منذ تلك اللحظة تبدأ أوديسة حقيقية في اقتفاء أثر خاطفيها.
يبرهن لنا فيكيروا معتمداً على وقائع حقيقية أن ما كنا نعتبره قد أصبح من الماضي، ما زال واقعاً ووصمة عار في جبين القرن العشرين: تجارة العبيد.
أصدر الكاتب أكثر من ستين كتاباً، تسع من رواياته تم تقديمها كأعمال سينمائية، منها رواية "أبنوس"، وهو من أكثر كتاب إسبانيا المعاصرين قراءة في العالم.
