"عمدة الطالب" هو مختصر نفيس جمع فيه مؤلفه جمال الحسيني المعروف بابن عنبه (748-828ه) أنساب آل أبي طالب يحيط بأصل نسب الطالبية وقواعده، ويحوي خفيّ أسراره، ويضبط معاقده، ينقل كلام الرواة، ويتحرى نصوص الثقات. فجاء وفقاً لمؤلفه "كتاباً نفيس المطالب، كما يقترح الطالب في كل أنساب آل أبي طالب، قرن إلى إيجاز الألفاظ إطناب المعاني، واحتوى على مهمات الضوابط مع سهولة المباني، يحتاج المبتدىء إلى مطالعته، ولا يستغني المنتهي عن مراجعته ... وقد رتبته على مقدمة وثلاثة أصول، وجعلت لكل أصل فصولاً إعانة للسالك على الوصول ...".
وبناءً عليه، يستعين المؤلف في جمع الأنساب بالأحاديث الشريفة المتسلسلة عن النبي وآله والأئمة على الجميع السلام، ثم يورد كافة الروايات على اختلافها لخدمة الغرض من الكتاب وبيان النسب الصحيح، ويذكر حوادث تدل على صحة الخبر من سيرة أهل بيتى النبوة كما جاءت في الكتب المعتبرة. فذكر ممن هم في أعقاب أبي طالب وفقاً للأصول، الأصل الأول: في ذكر عقب عقيل بن أبي طالب، والأصل الثاني: في ذكر عقب جعفر بن أبي طالب، والأصل الثالث في ذكر عقب أمير المؤمنين علي بن ابي طالب رضي الله عنه فتوزعت الأنساب في خمسة فصول. الأول: في ذكر عقب أبي محمد الحسن بن علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه، والثاني: في ذكر عقب الحسين بن علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه، والثالث: في ذكر عقب أبي القاسم محمد بن أمير المؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب وهو المشهور بإبن حنفية، والرابع: في ذكر عقب العباس بن أمير المؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه، والخامس والأخير: في ذكر عقب عمر الأطرف إبن أمير المؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه وأبا الأطرف هو أبا القاسم، ولد توأماً لأخته رقية.
