جمع المصنف في هذا الكتاب ما عثر عليه من مراجعات لأمير المؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه في حياة الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم وبعد وفاته في عصر أبي بكر وعمر وعثمان ومعاوية بن أبي سفيان.
وقد قسّم كتابه هذا إلى خمسة أقسام كانت في مراجعات حول الإمام علي رضي الله عنه في: الأمور المشكلة في عهد النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وفي حياته، في عصر الخليفة الأولى أبي بكر، في عصر الخليفة الثاني عمر، في عصر الخليفة الثالث عثمان بن عفان، في عصر معاوية بن أبي سفيان. وجعل المصنف لكتابه هذا مقدمة ذكر فيها بعض ما روي، أو قيل، في علم علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه. هذا وإن معظم هذه المراجعات أخذها المصنف من كتب علماء أهل السنة رواها من كتبهم بإجازة من علمائهم.
