حينما تسمع ضحكة، فهناك على الأرجح: حجا. إنه دائماً يتخبط في مشكلة ما طريقة وعليه أن يجد حلاً لها. وإذا لم تكن لديه مشكلة، فإنه يحل ضيفاً على مشاكل الغير. لا يحتك جحا بشيء إلا وتتولد من جراء احتكاكه بهذا الشيء شرارة الضحك. نضحك من حجا عندما ينجح في أمر من الأمور، ونضحك عندما يفشل. نضحك عندما يخطئ، ونضحك عندما يصيب.
ولكي تحدث المفارقة المضحكة، فلا بد من وجود طرف آخر يشارك جحا بطولة الحدث الطريف، لذلك نجد على المسرح: جحا وحماره. أو جحا وزوجته. أو جحا وابنه، أو جحا وأصحابه. أو جحا والتاجر. وجحا والقاضي. وجحا واللص. وأحياناً: جحا وجحا!.
تبدأ الحادثة "الجحوية" عادية بسيطة، ثم لا تلبث أن تتعقد لتطلب حلاً، ولا يتأخر الحل بل يأتي دائماً حاسماً وسريعاً. وهو يأتي من حيث لا نتوقع ولا نخمن. فترتبك في البداية ونندهش ثم لا نلبث أن نضحك... ومن حادثة إلى حادثة تتكون لدينا صورة عن شخصية جحا. هذه الشخصية الغنية المعقدة المتعددة السطوح، المتناقضة الصفات والمواقف.
فجحا أبله هنا وذكي هناك. ساذج وحكيم. مغفل ونبيه. خير وشرير. عالم وجاهل... وتناقضات شخصيته هذه جعلت البعض يشكون في وجوده الواقعي... وذهبوا إلى الاعتقاد بأنه شخصية وهمية أنتجها الناس واستخدموها كالمشجب يعلقون عليه ما تحفل به حياتهم من طرائف وفكاهات.
يبقى أن المهم بالنسبة لنا في هذا الكتاب هو نوادر جحا وليس شخصيته التي يمكن للقارئ أن يلتمس المعلومات عنها في كتب أخرى اهتمت بهذا الموضوع.
لا يخلو أي تجمع إنساني من ذلك الشخص الطريف الذي وهبه الله البديهة والحساسية النقدية المرهفة، التي تجعله يلتقط أحداث الحياة وأحوالها العادية فتتحول على يديه إلى ضحك.
وتاريخنا العربي، حافل بهذه الشخصيات المرحة الطريفة التي أبدعت ونسج الناس حولها الكثير من الطرائف والنوارد، المفعمة بروح النقد الاجتماعية والخلقي والأدبي والسياسي.
