يهدف هذا البحث الذي يقع في ثلاثة أجزاء إلى دراسة إحدى المسائل الخلافية وهي مسألة الإمامة في ضوء الكتاب والسنة النبوية المطهرة وغاية ذلك إظهار الحق الذي لا يرتاب فيه أحد واعتبار ذلك مدخلاً إلى التوفيق بين السنة والشيعة بأيسر السبل دون إغفال لما بين المذهبين من فروق هي في حقيقتها أقل كثيراً من الأمور التي تجمع بينهما حتى ليمكن القول أن المطلع على الكتب المسلمين قد يجد الفروق بين مذاهب السنة أقل كثيراً من الفروق بين السنة والشيعة.
وتحقيقاً للغاية والتزاما بالموضوعية اعتمد الباحث في مؤلفه على مراجع أهل السنة وصحاحهم. وقد جعل مدار بحثه الكشف عما إذا كان الحديث وافياً في بيان موضوع الإمامة، وهل تعرض لها القرآن الكريم أم أنها كانت معروضة في حدود قواعد معينة نص عليها الكتاب أو صرح بها النبي الأكرم صلى الله عليه وسلم.
ويؤكد المؤلف أن الإمامة منصوص عليها في الكتاب والسنة والأدلة العقلية تدعم وتؤيد هذا القول. حتى أن النصوص جاءت بالتواتر لتثبت ذلك بحيث يحصل القطع والاطمئنان التام من صحة السند وقطيعته. ولم يكن ما قام به المؤلف عملية جمع واستقصاء للأدلة بقدر ما كان الأمر استدلالا واستشهاداً بنصوص من القرآن والسنة.
يبحث المؤلف في الجزء الأول موقف النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم من الخلافة ويؤكد أن الوصاية ضرورة تفرضها طبيعة المجتمع وهي ضرورة في النظام الإسلامي وجوباً وشرعاً ويسوق على ذلك أدلة استقاها من النصوص التي اعتمدها في البحث. أما الجزء الثاني فهو مكرس لدراسة نصوص القرآن الكريم وتوضيحات الرسول محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم. أما الجزء الثالث فهو بحث في آية المودة التي اختص بها الله تبارك وتعالى أهل البيت وهو يعرض إلى بعض جوانبها التي لها ارتباطاً بالموضوع والمضمون.
