يضم هذا الكتاب بين دفتيه مجموعة محاضرات ألقاها "جان لابلانش" في كلية التربية في جامعة السوربون، اعتمدت خلال التعليم الرسمي خطوات إشكالية ومؤولة على طول خطوط كثيرة لنظية التحليل النفسي وجاءت خلال الأعوام (75-76-1977م) وهذه المحاضرات خاصة بطلاب دبلوم الدراسات المعمّقة في "علم النفس المرضي العيادي والتحليل النفسي".
يبحث الكتاب في المصادر الجنسية للنزوة وعن قدرها ومآلها، من هنا بحث لابلانش في المكونات اللاجنسية والمصادر الجنسية الدائمة لهذه النزوة، أكثر مما بحث عن عملية تجاوز "الجنس" إلى "الحفاظ على النسل والذات".
يدرس لابلانش الإبداع الإستثنائي عند فرويد – في كتابه: "ما وراء مبدأ اللذة" الذي "يؤدي إلى فكرة الإبداع المجدد والمتكرر، والمتتابع، للطاقة الجنسية، أي إلى إعادة انفتاح دائم للإستفادة وليس لتقنين هذه الطاقة الموجودة سلفاً كمعطى أساسي. هذا الإبداع المجدد، هذا النوع من الجنس مما يمكن أن نسميه إنتاجاً تمت حكايته على التو ومباشرة على شكل إبداع يؤتي ثماره إنجازاً، يبدو لنا مرتبطاً بحميمية مع مسألة الحدث الهلفي .. هذا المتحرف عن التسامي يظهر لي غير منفصل عن التحليل النفسي ذاته إذا كان التحليل قادراً فعلاً على تحريك عملية التسامي نفسها وليس فقط منتجاً لمفهوم التسامي، وهو ما يتم في سياق الحركة الثقافية بمجملها" جان لابلانش.
