يتسم منهج السلف في فهم النصوص بالاعتدال دون إفراط أو تفريط ويؤكد على جمع شمل الأمة من خلال دعوة القرآن الكريم والحديث الشريف. ولم يكن منهج السلف-يوماً-يعرف الجمود ولا التشدد لأن الرسول صلوات الله وسلامه عليه قرر أن الدين يسر ولن يشاد الدين أحد إلا غلبه. وقام منهج السلف على فهم النصوص من كتاب الله أولاً، ثم من حديث رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وسلم) وسنته المشرفة، ثم بما أثر من الصحابة والتابعين. ولم تكن الآراء الاجتهادية أو اختلاف وجهات النظر في فهم النصوص-عند السلف-مدعاة ليكفر بعضهم بعضاً أريحكم البعض على الآخر بالفسق أو البدعة. بل كان سلفنا يرون أن الآراء الاجتهادية ما دامت لا تتصادم مع عتاب الله تعالى ولامع السنة النبوية الصحيحة لا يردونها بل يأخذ منها أهل كل عصر ومصر ما يلائم الزمان والمكان. من هذا المنطلق جاء هذا الكتاب النفيس الذي بين يدينا والذي يحمل بين دفتيه موازين البحث العلمي النزيه، ويؤصل القواعد الثابتة للحقائق العلمية والدينية، متسماً بوسطية الإسلام دون غلو أو تقصير.
وفيه يتحدث المؤلف. وهو سماحة السيد محمد بن علوي المالكي الحسني عن مسألة مهمة كثر فيها الخلاف بين طلبة العلم وهي مسألة شد الرجال إلى زيارة النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم) وهدفه تبيان الآداب الشرعية لزيارة النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم)، وتأصيل المراسيم لزيارته عليه الصلاة والسلام وفق ما جاء عنه من أحاديث في فضائل زيارته حياً وميتاً، وكذلك هدفه ببيان ما كان عليه عمل الصحابة الإجلاء. والسلف الصالح والأئمة المعتبرون في زيارتهم له (صلى الله عليه وسلم) وزيارة مسجده ومدينته الطيبة. وإتماماً للفائدة جمع المؤلف في قائمة كتابه توليفة من النصوص التي دونها الفقهاء والمحدثين في هذا الموضوع، والتي جاءت على أربعة أنواع كتب المناقب والخصائص، كتب فقه المذاهب، الكتب الخاصة بالزيارة، كتب المناسك.
