كثيرة هي الكتب التي ناقشت منهج النبوة وإشكالية نهوض الأمة الإسلامية من عدمها، ولكن الكاتب عمر عبيد حسنة يبني عمله على المراجعة والتقويم والنقد، ويدعو المسلمون إلى اختبار مناهج وأدوات النظر لمعرفة مدى مقاربتها لمنهج البوة، في حالات الركود، والسقوط، والتراجع، والهزائم، وانتشار الفتن، فهذه المناهج عجزت عن اكتشاف مواطن الخلل، لأن ثقافة التقويم والمراجعة عند البعض تعتبر من المحرمات، وتصنف في الخط من قدر التعاليم الإسلامية، أو الانتقاص منها، أو نوع من فلسفة الهزيمة والقعود عن الاستجابة لدواعي الجهاد والمواجهة.
من هنا يشدد الكاتب على دور النقد في حياة الأمة، ويذكر المسلمون بعلم الجرح والتعديل وعلم الإسناد ونقد السند والمتون التي تميزت بها أمتنا الإسلامية، وضرورة رد الأمر إلى أولي العلم، من العلماء والرجال القادرين على استنباط الحلول، وليس أولئك الذين يدّعون العلم بكل شيء. يقول الله تعالى: "بل كذبوا بما لم يحيطوا بعلمه.." [يونس: 39]. وبهذا المعنى يقدم الكاتب عمله هذا على أنه: "رؤى وأفكار ومحاولة للقيام بمقاربات ومقارنات مع منهج النبوة الغائب عن مسالكنا، في كثير من الأحيان، والواقع لاكتشاف الفجوات والحفر الخطيرة، التي تنتظر الأمة إذا لم تتدارك نفسها وتسأل عن الشر حتى لا يلحق بها، جاء استقراؤها من واقع الحال، وأهمية طرحها من خلال حالات الفشل والبؤس، التي تعيشها الأمة، في محاولة لمقاربتها مع منهج النبوة، وإلقاء الضوء على إشكالية النهضة؛ وهي في النهاية اجتهاد فكري قابل للنقض والنقد والقبول والرفض، كسائر كلام البشر..".
يتألف الكتاب من أربعة محاور جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: 1-من مقومات منهج النبوة، 2-من سمات منهج النبوة، 3-التعليم الشرعي.. دعوة للمراجعة، 4-لعلمه الذين يستنبطونه (الاجتهاد-فقه التنزيل-شروط التكليف وغيرها).
