يتناول هذا الكتاب شعراء بارزين من بلدان المشرق العربي بدءاً بالشاعر المصري محمود سامي البارودي المولود سنة 1839 وإنتهاء بالشاعرة السودانية روضة الحاج المولودة سنة 1969، فيكون الفارق بينهما 130 سنة، ويضمّ 53 شاعراً بينهم 4 شاعرات.
لا أدّعي أني تناولت جميع الشعراء الأعلام - اخترت الذين يمثّلون الإتجاهات الهامة في الشعر العربي الحديث.
وهو ليس مجرّد مختارات، بل إنه يتناول كل شاعر بالبحث ويورد أهمّ ما قاله النقّاد فيه ويناقشه.
آمل أن يلقى هذا الكتاب رواجاً بحيث يكون مرجعاً للشعر العربي الحديث في بلدان المشرق العربي، يعرض هذا الشعر ويعرّف بالشعراء ويُلقي الضوء على شاعريتهم ويضعهم في الميزان متوخّياً الإنصاف دون تمييز أو تحامل أو ترويج يسعى إلى الدقة العلمية والنقد المجرّد لكي يبقى الشعر ديوان العرب.
