والكتاب موضوع التحقيق، مؤلف لطيف الحجم، اقْتُضِبت فيه السيرة النبوية إقتضاباً، من غير تقطير أو تثريب، وقد بوبت موضوعاتها تبويباً حسناً، فاشتمل على مقدمة يسيرة، أبان فيها عن كنه الكتاب ومحتواه "مختصر في سيرة رسول الله" ومصادره إجمالاً؛ وقد اُتْبِعَت المقدمة بثمانية عشر فصلاً، جعل أولها في التعريف بالنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وتعرُّفِ أحواله قبل وبعد البعثة، في الطورين: المكي والمدني.
بينما جعل الفصل الثاني في صفاته الخِلْقية والخُلُقِية، والثالث في أعلام نبوته، والرابع في أولاده، والخامس في أعمامه وعماته، والسادس في زوجاته، والسابع في سرياته، والثامن في خدمه، والتاسع في مواليه، والعاشر في كتابه، والحادي عشر في رسله، والثاني عشر في مؤذنيه، والثالث عشر في أمرائه على النواحي، والرابع عشر في التعريف بأصدقائه قبل النبوة، مع الإشارة الموجزة إلى بعض متولّي قضاء حاجياته من أصحابه، ومن ذب عنه من الشعراء والخطباء والفرسان، والخامس عشر في سلاحه وآلاته، والسادس عشر في ملابسه وفرشه وراياته، والسابع عشر في دوابه ومراكيبه، والثامن عشر في وفاته، وما تبعها من تكفينه والصلاة عليه ودفنه.
ومادة هذا المؤلف - قياساً بغيره من مختصرات العصر - سليمة في معظمها، دقيقة في نقلها عن المصادر.
