للغة وسيلة للتفاهم والتواصل بني البشر وقد مرت بمراحل تحول عديدة قبل أن تكتب صيغتها الأخيرة، ويعد مجال الدراسات اللغوية مجالاتً جديداً نسبياً، ومع أن العرب ساهموا بشكل فعال في وضع أسس الدراسات اللغوية، حتى أنهم ابتكروا نظريات ودراسات وصفية عديدة، لم يبلغها الغربيون إلا في وقت متأخر، فإن عجلة العطاء والإبداع توقفت عندهم منذ زمن طويل.
فلم يعد علماء العربية قادرين على أن يجودوا بشيء جديد، ومع التطور الذي شهده الغرب من ناحية هذه الدراسات ارتأى علماء اللغة العرب، ضرورة بحث الحياة في هذه الدراسات هلى مستوى الوطن العربي، سواء بالتأليف أو التعريب، بهدف توحيد مصطلحات علم اللغة الحديث على المستوى القومي، ومساعدة القارئ العربي على متابعة ما يكتب باللغة الإنجليزية في حقل علوم اللغة الحديثة حيث اجتمع عدد من المختصين في علوم اللغة الحديثة، الذين يمثلون الاتجاهات والمدارس المختلفة في حقل الدراسات اللغوية فقاموا بتعريب عدد معين من المصطلحات واقتراح المقابلات العربية لها مع تذييل كل مصطلح بتعريف موجز له.
وقد أعطوا الأولوية للمصطلحات العربية المعروفة قديماً وحديثاً وصاغوا مصطلحات جديدة وعربوا الكثير من المصطلحات الإنجليزية التي ليس لها مقابل عربي دقيق ومناسب كما استبعدوا المصطلحات المهجورة ويتبوأ كل ذلك ترتيباً ألفبائياً ولم يأخذوا بعين الاعتبار أداة التعريف (أل) بعين الاعتبار.
