وضعت هذه الدراسة على صيغة عمل أكاديمي جادة تضمن ثلاثة أبواب كبرى عالجت العلاقة بين الدولتين العثمانية والصوفية من منظور اثني عشر زاوية، لاشتمال... كل باب على أربعة فصول، تناول فيها الباب الأول المنطلقات الجغرافية والاستراتيجية والاقتصادية والديموغرافية، التي تحددت من خلالها نشأة وامتداد الدولتين، على رقعة امتدت من الحد الذي يفصل آسية الوسطى عن الهضبة الإيرانية شرقاً، إلى الحد الذي يفصل منطقة البلقان عن أوروبة الغربية غرباً، على صيغة دراسة موجزة، لما تحتوي عليه هذه الرقعة، من نقاط استراتيجية واقتصاديات وتعددات ديموغرافية.
أما الباب الثاني، فقد تضمن حبكة هذه الدراسة، وما اشتملت عليه من علاقات في حيز الحرب والسلام، رسمت من خلاله مجموعة طغيانات إحدى الدولتين على جانب من مناطق الأخرى، وذلك تبعاً لظروف القوة والضعف، لعدم استقرار قوى إحدى الدولتين على حالة واحدة، حيث كان ازدياد قوة إحداهما يعني طغيانها على جانب من مناطق الأخرى، وتوازن القوى من الناحية الاستراتيجية (قوة وضعفاً) كان يعني حالات من الاستقرار والسلام بين الجانبيين.
وأما الباب الثالث، فقد سلط الضوء على مجمل انعكاسات حالات الحرب والسلام على مجتمعي الدولتين، مع التركيز إلى حد ما، على التفاعلات الحضارية، في الإدارة الداخلية واللغة والفكر والفن.
وقد تطلب فهم هذه العلاقة، من جوانبها المتعددة، الغوص في ميادين معرفية، تعدت المصادر التاريخية والدراسات الناشئة عنها إلى محاكاة كتب اللغة والأدب والفن، علاوة إلى أن هذه الدراسة حتمت على الباحث بالضرورة دراسة اللغة الفارسية وإتقانها، للإفادة من مصادر تاريخ الدولة الصفوية، ودراسات باحثيها المعاصرين بلغتهم الأم، وذلك لندرة الدراسات العربية المتعلقة بهذه الدولة، على عكس ما توفره المكتبة العربية من تواريخ ودراسات، تتناول الدولة العثمانية من زوايا عديدة.
